  • The Minister signed off the Regulations on Friday 27 February.
  • The Regulations were approved by Parliament on Thursday 5 March.
  • The New Pension Scheme will come into effect on 1 April 2015.
  • PFEW has instructed Legal Counsel to undertake a review of the new regulations in the context of the consultation process that has taken place and the original legal advice which was obtained in 2012 and 2013.

The Federation is aware that the practical implementation of the scheme has not been fully bottomed out, and there may be teething issues. However, we believe the scheme itself remains a good scheme for members, and this is supported by the chairman of the Association of Member-Directed Pension Schemes. Any officer thinking of opting out should carefully consider the fact that this would cause them to lose out on a number of valuable benefits with regard to; existing accrued PPS/NPPS rights; access to ill-health and death in service benefits; and the loss of employer contributions and tax relief on their own contributions.  Officers should seek advice from a qualified financial advisor before taking a decision.

We remain keen to support members all we can, and this includes continuing to pass concerns and comments to the Home Office and asking them to address them. If you experience any difficulties with the implementation of the new Pension Scheme please email pensions@polfed.org, we do ask that you are specific as to any difficulties you experience. Whilst we will not be able to address every query individually, we will be able to collate the responses and present these to the Home Office. In particular, if you could use the subject of your email to summarise the nature of the problem that would be helpful.

We do ask that you do not contact the Federation to request personal pension forecasts, as we will not be in a position to provide such information. Once we have had the opportunity to review the new Regulations we intend to provide a number of pension road-shows around the Force. The dates for these will be announced in the near future.
